We are currently in discussions with hotels in Tonopah to provide sufficient hotel rooms at preferred rates for our projected attendance of 200-400 members. We expect room reservations to open no later than January 2022.
While we do not yet have firm hotel rates, we expect all of our rooms to be quite reasonably priced. All hotels include free parking, and there are no parking garages or height restrictions. Where possible, we include below room rates shown for comparable dates in July 2021. These rates are not necessarily what the hotels will be offering our members. Rates do not include 9% transient occupancy tax.
The Town of Tonopah Hotels Website lists more than 500 hotel rooms available in Tonopah, including the recently opened Comfort Inn and Belvada Hotel.
The beautifully restored historic Mizpah Hotel is one of the closest hotels to the convention center (approximately 450 ft / 140 m / three blocks). (Photo courtesy of the Mizpah Hotel.) (July 2021 rates $115-$154/night.)
When our bid team visited Tonopah over Memorial Day 2019, we spoke with hotel supervisor Rae Graham and her wife Kayla (a staffer at the adjacent Mizpah Club casino) about the Mizpah Hotel, the town of Tonopah, and how they think a Westercon here would be a good fit for both the convention and the town.
Diagonally across the street from the Mizpah is their companion property, the Belvada Hotel (approximately 300 ft / 90 m), now open after the completion of a $3 million restoration. (Photo courtesy of the Mizpah Hotel.) Just out of sight up the street to the right is the entrance to the Tonopah Convention Center. (July 2021 rates $134-$169/night.) Some rooms include kitchenettes.
Also downtown is the Jim Butler Inn and Suites (approximately 525 ft / 160 m), a relatively small two-story hotel conveniently close to the Convention Center. (July 2020 rates $71-up.)
The Best Western Hi-Desert Inn is approximately 1450 ft / 450 m walking distance from the Convention Center. For comparison, at the 2018 Worldcon in San Jose, California, the distance from the entrance to the main exhibit hall to the Fairmont Hotel (site of evening hospitality functions) was approximately 1700 ft / 520 m. (July 2020 rates $119-$158; includes a breakfast bar.)
The Old Brewery Hostel (managed by the Mizpah) offers 2 queen and 8 full-sized sleeping rooms with a full-sized kitchen & 2 community shared bathrooms (1 with accessible/roll-in shower) for budget-minded travelers. (July 2021 rates $55-$65/night.)
Approximately 1 mile / 1.6 km south of downtown is the Tonopah Station hotel, which is also adjacent to a Raley’s grocery store.
The Diamond Jim suite at the Tonopah Station is particularly nice and quite affordable. (July 2020 rate $135.) The standard hotel rooms (July 2020 rates $73-up.) are comfortable and clean, with refrigerators. (A microwave oven is available on the second floor landing for shared use.)
Do note, however, that most of the Tonopah Station rooms require stairs to access.
Six standard rooms (including two accessible rooms, one with roll-in shower) and two suites at the Tonopah Station Hotel do not require stairs to access; all other rooms require negotiating stairs. All rooms are on the second floor of the hotel, accessible by elevator or stairs. There are no ground floor rooms.
The Tonopah Station Hotel also has an RV park, one of several in the town.
Yes, this is the site of the world famous Clown Motel! (about 0.6 mi / 950 m north of downtown) (July 2020 rates $59-$69.)
The National 9 Inn near the north end of Tonopah (approximately 0.8 mi / 1.3 km) is a budget motel with easy highway access and a light included breakfast bar. (July 2020 rates $62-$67.)
The Comfort Inn at the north end of Tonopah (approximately 1.2 mi / 2 km driving distance) adds 60 additional new rooms (30 double queens and 30 kings) to Tonopah. (July 2020 rates $120/up including breakfast bar.)
Approximately 5% of the hotel rooms in Tonopah are specifically equipped as handicapped-accessible, and approximately 1% have roll-in showers such as this room at the Comfort Inn.
